Farmers train farmers on propagation and management of tree crops
ITFSP and organizations
working with it have coordinated their efforts to develop new extension
methods and promote new concepts. These efforts are to-
- Organize germplasm
production and distribution systems that are decentralized and demand
driven
- Develop cost-effective
and sustainable extension methods for development of practical skills
- Design research
and development strategies that identify and intensify indigenous tree
production
- Develop new tree
products and marketing strategies applicable in smallholder circumstances
- Increase cooperation
and networking within the region among farmers, extension and research
staff and also with the private sector
- Develop private
business-oriented farmer organizations that are transparent and sustainable
and that can assist smallholders with information, training and marketing
services.
In implementing
these concepts, ITFSP is certain that training extension officers
and farmer trainers together in on-the-job courses is highly effective
and that the participants appreciate this joint approach. This table shows
who has participated in the training sessions and the number of farmers
trained in the villages. It also shows how many mother trees of improved
mango varieties have been established on farms, partly because of the
training sessions.
